Farmers urged to cultivate traditional paddy varieties

Workshop on traditional paddy cultivation and on climate change

The Saraswathi Krishi Vigyan Kendra organised a one-day workshop on traditional paddy cultivation and value addition to mitigate climate change impacts in Karur district at Puzhutheri near here on Friday.
Sponsored by the National Council of Rural Institutes (NCRI), Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, the event turned out to be a wonderful opportunity for the farmers and field specialists.
Member Secretary of NCRI Dr K. Sudhakar presiding over the function outlined the various initiatives being undertaken by his organisation to link interest groups in various fields including agriculture.
NABARD Assistant General Manager A. Parthiban highlighted the ill-effects of the non-conventional food habits and suggested consumption of traditional variety of rice and minor millets that could provide good health supplements. Acknowledging the services of late organic agriculture scientist G. Nammalvar , Mr. Parthiban said the farmer leader was responsible for the popular spread of traditional paddy varieties to a great extent in the State.
Mr. Parthiban sensitised the farmers to adopt cluster approach by forming producer organisation model for taking up cultivation, sorting, grading, value addition and marketing of traditional paddy and minor millets. He also said that NABARD would support programmes for the spread of traditional variety .
The first technical session was handled by Dhalapathy, an organic farmer from Kumbakonam, who detailed his experience in cultivation of traditional paddy varieties and their medicinal importance. He also shared the strategies adopted by him in processing and branding of the traditional varieties , apart from the promotion of a Farmers Producer Organisation for organic products.
That was followed by a session on Marketing of traditional rice and its by-products by K. S. Senthil Kumar of Tiruchi, who was involved in marketing organic rice and other products. He suggested various business models for marketing the products.
